CRPE Externe vs Interne: What Actually Separates the Two Tracks
The CRPE externe and the second concours interne lead to the same job but have different eligibility rules and test emphasis. Here is the real difference.
Editorial Desk
The CRPE externe and the second concours interne both lead to the same job, tenured professeur des ecoles, but they are not the same door. The externe is open to candidates with a licence or master pathway and no prior public teaching service, while the second concours interne is reserved for candidates who have already worked roughly three years as a contractual teacher or in an equivalent function. You cannot register for both in the same session.
Who is eligible for the externe track?
The externe track is built for candidates coming out of higher education. Under the ongoing reform, the reference qualification is shifting to a validated licence (bac+3) held by the reference date in the notice, while the historical bac+5 route, built around a Master MEEF held or nearly finished, continues to run in parallel during the transition. Neither route requires prior teaching experience.
Who is eligible for the interne track?
The second concours interne is for people already working inside public education, typically as contractuels, who have accumulated around three years of service as set out in the notice. It exists precisely because someone already teaching in a classroom brings a different kind of preparation than someone coming straight from a university course, and the eligibility bar reflects that.
There is also a troisieme concours, a separate door again for candidates with at least five years of professional activity outside teaching, an elective mandate, or responsibility within an association. It sits alongside, not inside, the externe/interne distinction.
Do the written tests differ?
All three tracks (externe, second concours interne, troisieme concours) sit three written admissibilite tests: a disciplinary test in French, one in mathematics, and a written application test chosen among sciences, histoire-geographie and EMC, or arts on the bac+5 external track. The content and weighting can differ by track, and the interne version leans more heavily on professional experience and applying pedagogical knowledge to real classroom situations, rather than testing the same academic material the same way. For the exact coefficients and pass thresholds, see CRPE scoring explained.
Do the oral tests differ?
Both tracks lead to oraux d’admission built around a lesson demonstration (expose) and an entretien with the jury on professional posture and knowledge of the education system, plus optional language tests where an academie offers them. The interne oral typically gives more weight to the candidate’s accumulated classroom experience, since that is exactly what the track is meant to recognise.
Which track has more places?
The externe track generally offers the largest number of places, since it is the main recruitment channel for the profession. The interne and troisieme concours tracks exist to open a second and third door, not to compete with the externe for the bulk of vacancies. Exact numbers change every session and are published in the current notice on devenirenseignant.gouv.fr, alongside the general overview in what the CRPE is.
Does the reform change this comparison?
The reform repositioning the concours from bac+5 to bac+3 affects the externe track specifically, moving its reference qualification earlier in the academic pathway. It does not remove the second concours interne or the troisieme concours, which keep their own separate eligibility logic. The mechanics of the reform are covered in the CRPE reform explained.
Frequently asked questions
Can I switch from externe to interne between sessions? Yes, as long as you meet that track’s eligibility conditions at the reference date of the session you register for; you simply cannot be registered for both in the same session.
Does the interne track have easier written tests? Not easier, differently focused. The interne written tests weight professional and pedagogical judgement more heavily rather than reducing academic content.
Is the pass rate different between tracks? Pass rates vary by session and by academie because the ratio of candidates to places differs between tracks; check the current session’s statistics rather than assuming one track is consistently easier.
Do externe and interne candidates end up with the same status after passing? Yes. Both become fonctionnaire stagiaire on success and follow the training year before titularisation, as covered in fonctionnaire stagiaire vs titulaire.
Where do I confirm which track I qualify for? In the official notice for the session you plan to sit, published on devenirenseignant.gouv.fr, since eligibility wording is set fresh for each session.
