After the CRPE: How Académie Assignment and Voeux Actually Work

Passing the CRPE gets you admitted as a fonctionnaire stagiaire, but it does not by itself decide where you will teach. Placement is organised by academie, the regional division of the French education system, and within that academie by department, based on the candidate’s rank in the concours combined with the voeux, the ranked preferences, they submit afterward.

How does the ranking actually decide placement?

The better a candidate is ranked at the concours, the more real choice they have over department and post type when voeux are submitted. Assignment takes into account the characteristics of the posts on offer and how well they match each stagiaire’s academic and professional background, together with the candidate’s stated preferences and their order of merit in the concours. A candidate ranked near the top of the list effectively gets first pick among what remains; a candidate ranked near the cutoff has to accept whatever is left once higher-ranked candidates have chosen.

What is the voeux process?

A stagiaire generally has far less flexibility to move than a confirmed titulaire does once mutation rights become available.
