SSC CGL 2026 vacancy revised to 10,731 as Tier 1 begins

The Staff Selection Commission’s original SSC CGL 2026 notification advertised 12,256 vacancies. A revised vacancy notice published on 24 September 2026 cuts that to 10,731, a reduction of 1,525 posts across Group B and Group C cadres.

This lands right before the Tier 1 exam, which runs as a computer-based test from 30 September to 30 October 2026 across 141 centres. If you registered against the original 12,256 figure, nothing about your application changes; the revision affects the vacancy breakdown you are competing for, not your eligibility to sit the exam.

What actually changed

SSC’s revised notice gives the new post-wise, category-wise and department-wise vacancy split. A drop in the headline number does not mean every post shrank by the same proportion: some cadres saw larger cuts than others. Check the department you applied against specifically, on the notice itself, rather than assuming a uniform percentage reduction from the 12,256 baseline.

Vacancy revisions between an SSC CGL notification and its Tier 1 exam are not unusual; participating departments finalise their intake numbers on their own timeline, and SSC updates the notice as departments confirm. Treat any vacancy figure quoted before the exam as provisional until SSC’s own notice says otherwise.

Admit cards

Admit cards for Tier 1 are being released in phases matched to each candidate’s allotted exam date, starting 27 September 2026 for the first batch (candidates sitting on 30 September). If your exam date is later in the window, expect your admit card roughly two to three days beforehand, not on a single fixed release date for everyone.
