What the CRPE is
The Concours de Recrutement de Professeurs des Ecoles (CRPE) is the annual competitive examination that recruits primary school teachers into the French public education system. It is organised nationally by the Ministere de l’Education nationale through its Direction generale des ressources humaines, and it is the only route into a tenured post as a professeur des ecoles teaching maternelle and elementaire classes. A candidate cannot simply apply for a teaching post: passing the CRPE, and then completing the training year that follows it, is what confers the status of fonctionnaire stagiaire and, eventually, of tenured teacher.
Preparation runs through the INSPE network, the Instituts Nationaux Superieurs du Professorat et de l’Education attached to French universities, which deliver the Master MEEF (Metiers de l’Enseignement, de l’Education et de la Formation). The master MEEF has historically combined academic coursework with the disciplinary and professional preparation the concours demands, which is why most candidates sit the CRPE while enrolled in an INSPE pathway rather than preparing independently.
Three tracks into the same concours
The CRPE is not one uniform door. The externe track is the main route for candidates coming from a licence or master pathway with no prior public service as a teacher. The second concours interne is reserved for candidates who have already served roughly three years as a contractual teacher or in an equivalent function in public education, recognising experience already gained in the classroom. The troisieme concours opens a different route again: at least five years of professional activity outside teaching, an elective mandate, or responsibility within an association, on the reasoning that varied life and work experience is itself relevant preparation for the classroom. Each track carries its own eligibility conditions and, in places, its own written and oral requirements, but all three lead to the same qualification at the end.
Two phases: ecrits, then oraux
Like most French concours, the CRPE runs in two decisive stages. The ecrits d’admissibilite come first: written tests in French (analysis and rewriting of documents) and in mathematics (mathematics and scientific reasoning), plus a written application test the candidate chooses among sciences, histoire-geographie and EMC, or arts on the external bac+5 track. Passing the ecrits does not confer the post; it only admits a candidate to the oraux d’admission.
The oraux are where the concours becomes explicitly professional rather than academic. Candidates deliver an expose, effectively a short lesson demonstration, on the teaching of a subject taught in primary school, then face an entretien with the jury on professional posture, knowledge of the education system, and the coherence of their professional project. Where an academie offers one, candidates may also sit an oral test in a regional living language, or an optional oral in a modern foreign language, as set out in the notice for that session.
Academie posting and the stagiaire year
Success in the CRPE is ranked and allocated by academie, the regional administrative division of the French education system, not by a single national list. A candidate who passes is admitted as a fonctionnaire stagiaire and spends a training year, generally alongside continued INSPE coursework, working in a real classroom under supervision before confirmation as a tenured professeur des ecoles. Where a candidate is posted, and under what conditions the stagiaire year is completed, depends on the academie and the specific arrangements published for that session.
The 2025 reform
A structural reform moved the concours earlier in the academic pathway. Historically anchored at the master’s level (bac+5), the CRPE is being repositioned to the end of the third year of licence (bac+3) as the reference qualification for the external track, with a new master-level assessment added afterward within the reformed MEEF pathway. During the transition, the bac+5 route, built around a Master MEEF held or in its final year at the reference date, continues to run in parallel with the new bac+3 external track. Candidates should always confirm which version of the concours a given session’s notice describes, since the reform changes both the reference qualification and the sequencing of the master degree relative to the exam itself.
Where to check current details
Vacancies, the exact ecrits and oraux calendar, and the precise wording of each track’s eligibility rules change from one session to the next. Devenirenseignant.gouv.fr and education.gouv.fr publish the official notice for each session, and registration runs through the Cyclades platform. Candidates preparing for a specific session should confirm dates, vacancies and eligibility against the current notice rather than a prior year’s figures.
