What the job involves
A Probationary Officer joins a public sector bank on a management track, starting with a fixed probation period of hands-on branch work (customer service, loan processing, cash handling, compliance) before moving into officer-level responsibilities. It is one of the more accessible graduate-entry routes into a stable, pensioned public sector role, precisely because a bachelor’s degree in any discipline qualifies you.
Postings can be anywhere the bank operates, and probationers are typically rotated across a few branches during training before a permanent posting.
How to get there
There is no single bank PO exam; each recruiter runs its own. IBPS PO recruits Probationary Officers for the pool of participating public sector banks other than the State Bank of India. SBI runs its own separate PO exam for State Bank of India specifically. The Reserve Bank of India runs RBI Grade B, a distinct and more competitive exam for a central bank officer role rather than a commercial bank branch role.
These are separate recruitment cycles with separate notifications, separate patterns and separate cutoffs, so a candidate aiming for a bank officer role typically prepares for more than one of them in parallel rather than betting on a single exam.
Qualification you need
A bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university is the common baseline across IBPS PO, SBI PO and RBI Grade B. Age limits and any additional eligibility differ by exam and are set out in each one’s own notification.
A realistic timeline
IBPS PO and SBI PO each typically run a preliminary exam, a main exam and an interview, so the full cycle from notification to appointment spans several months. RBI Grade B adds a further written phase beyond the standard two-tier pattern. Watching all three notification calendars, rather than one, is what actually shortens the realistic path into a bank officer role, since a candidate who clears any one of them has an offer.
