What RBI Grade A is
The Reserve Bank of India recruits Assistant Managers at Grade A through this exam, into specialist support functions rather than the generalist banking officer track. It is distinct from RBI Grade B (Officer track): Grade A here covers the Rajbhasha (Official Language) stream, which handles the Bank’s Hindi-language administrative and translation work, and the Protocol and Security stream, which handles the Bank’s protocol and internal security functions. Neither stream is a rephrasing of the other, and neither is a rephrasing of Grade B.
Recruitment is stream specific. A candidate applies to one notified stream, and both the qualification required and the exam’s later stages depend entirely on which stream a candidate has chosen.
Who can apply
For the Rajbhasha stream, a Master’s degree in Hindi with English as a subject at degree level, or a Master’s degree in Sanskrit or English with Hindi as a subject at degree level, or an equivalent qualification, is required, as specified in the notification. For the Protocol and Security stream, a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university is required, along with any service or physical eligibility criteria RBI notifies for that stream. The general age limit is 21 to 30 years as on the date specified in the notification, with standard relaxations for reserved categories and persons with disability. Indian citizens and subjects of Nepal or Bhutan are eligible, as RBI’s citizenship rules specify.
How the exam runs
Phase I is an objective screening test covering Reasoning, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, and General Awareness, with negative marking for wrong answers as specified in the notification. Only candidates who clear the Phase I cutoff advance.
Phase II combines a Descriptive Writing paper in English with a stream-specific paper: for Rajbhasha candidates this tests Hindi language and translation skills, and for Protocol and Security candidates it tests subjects relevant to that role, as the notification specifies.
Candidates who clear Phase II sit an Interview. Final selection combines Phase II marks and Interview marks in the proportion RBI specifies each cycle. RBI has not published a Grade A exam pattern for every cycle in advance, so always confirm the current phase structure against the live notification rather than a previous cycle’s pattern.
Preparing the application
RBI specifies exact photograph and signature requirements in each notification rather than a fixed year to year standard, so check the current notification’s dimensions and file size before uploading. On exam day
Arrive at least an hour before the reporting time on your admit card, with the printed admit card and a government photo identification matching the name and photo on the admit card. No electronic devices are permitted inside the exam centre.
