Government exams for computer science graduates

A Computer Science or IT engineering graduate does not have the same government-exam map as a Mechanical or Civil graduate. Most core-engineering routes, ESE among them, list specific branches and do not include Computer Science. The routes that do count a CS degree are fewer and more specific, and knowing exactly which ones do is more useful here than a long list of exams that happen to accept engineers in general.

GATE’s Computer Science paper is the main structured gateway

GATE, the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, runs a separate paper for each engineering discipline, and Computer Science and Information Technology is one of them. GATE for PSU recruitment accepts a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Technology or Architecture, or in some disciplines a relevant master’s degree in Science, and the eligible streams recorded on this site explicitly include engineering-computer alongside civil, mechanical, electrical and electronics.

GATE itself is not a recruiter. It produces a score. A number of central Public Sector Undertakings then use that score, in a relevant discipline, to shortlist for their own recruitment, and each PSU runs its own further process and final selection on top of it. The PSU names this site’s own GATE-PSU page records, NTPC, ONGC, BHEL and IOCL among them, are core-engineering companies. Where a Computer Science intake exists at all in their GATE recruitment, it is typically a smaller share than their core discipline intake. Which PSUs are recruiting through GATE, in which discipline, and for how many posts, changes every year, and is published in that PSU’s own notification rather than the GATE notification itself. A CS graduate weighing GATE-linked PSU recruitment has to check the current year’s participating PSU list for a Computer Science or IT vacancy specifically, rather than assume a PSU on last year’s list is hiring CS engineers this year, or at all.

ISRO’s Scientist/Engineer route counts a CS degree

ISRO Scientist/Engineer recruits through its Centralised Recruitment Board for a first-class bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology in a discipline relevant to the notified vacancy, and the disciplines this site has verified against ISRO’s own recruitment notice include Computer Science alongside Mechanical, Electronics and Electrical. This is one of the few Indian scientific establishments where a CS or IT engineering degree is named as an eligible qualification in its own right, not folded into an “any engineering discipline” clause. As with any ISRO recruitment cycle, which specific disciplines are notified and how many posts are open in each varies by cycle, so the current notification is what determines whether a Computer Science vacancy is actually open when you are looking.

Where this site’s CS-specific data stops

A few kinds of government technical recruitment that a CS or IT graduate often asks about are not represented on this site with verified eligibility data yet: separate IT or technology-officer recruitment inside bank specialist-officer exams, and standalone scientist or engineer posts at bodies such as DRDO, NIC or C-DAC that run their own recruitment outside GATE. Some of these bodies do recruit CS and IT engineers through cycles of their own. This site does not yet carry a sourced eligibility record for any of them, so rather than describe a process this site has not verified, the honest answer is to check that body’s own recruitment page directly when a notification is open there. As those records get added, they will carry the same sourced, dated eligibility data every other exam on this site does.

IBPS PO and SBI PO, the two bank recruitment exams this site does carry, ask for a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, with no CS-specific track recorded here. A CS graduate is eligible on the same terms as any other graduate, not on any discipline-specific one.

What is open to you regardless of branch

Most graduate-level government recruitment does not ask which engineering branch your degree is in at all. SSC CGL, IBPS PO, SBI PO, and the UPSC Civil Services Examination all accept a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, Computer Science included, on the same footing as a Commerce or Arts degree. How to evaluate a GATE-CS PSU or ISRO opening

1. Confirm your GATE paper matches the vacancy’s named discipline. A GATE score from the Computer Science and Information Technology paper does not qualify you for a PSU vacancy notified for Electrical or Mechanical engineers, and the reverse holds too.
2. Read the current year’s PSU or ISRO notification for the exact vacancy count and discipline split before assuming a Computer Science post is open. Both change every cycle.
3. Check the age window against the notified “age as on” date using the age calculator rather than counting years by hand, since GATE-linked PSU recruitment and ISRO recruitment each set their own age ceiling separately from GATE itself.
4. If no GATE-linked PSU or ISRO cycle has an open CS vacancy right now, the branch-agnostic exams in the section above remain open year-round on their own separate calendars, and are worth tracking alongside a discipline-specific route rather than instead of it.
