What SSC GD Constable is
The GD Constable exam recruits into General Duty Constable posts across the Central Armed Police Forces, the Border Security Force, the Central Reserve Police Force, the Central Industrial Security Force, the Sashastra Seema Bal, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, the National Investigation Agency and the Secretariat Security Force, plus Rifleman posts in Assam Rifles. It is one of the highest volume recruitment exercises in the country by applicant count, because the qualification bar is class 10 and the posting is under the Ministry of Home Affairs, a genuinely large and stable employer.
This is a uniformed, physically demanding role from day one, which is why the selection process weighs the physical stages as heavily as the written one.
Who can apply
Class 10 pass is the academic requirement. The general age band is 18 to 23 years, narrower than most SSC exams, with the usual relaxations for reserved categories and ex-servicemen. Physical standards for height, chest and in some cases weight are also specified, varying by category and region, and these are confirmed in the notification rather than assumed.
How the exam runs
The written stage is a single computer based test: eighty questions across General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Knowledge and General Awareness, Elementary Mathematics, and English or Hindi, with a quarter mark penalty for each wrong answer.
Candidates who clear the written test proceed to the Physical Efficiency Test and Physical Standard Test, which measure running time, height, chest expansion and, in some recruitment cycles, weight, against category specific standards published in the notification. A medical examination follows for those who clear the physical stage. There is no interview.
Preparing the application
Photograph and signature specifications match the rest of the SSC family: a JPEG photograph between 20 and 50 kilobytes and a JPEG signature between 10 and 20 kilobytes. Use the resizers on this site if your file falls outside that range.
The application fee for general and OBC male candidates is one hundred rupees, waived for women, SC, ST and ex-servicemen.
On exam day
For the written test, arrive at least an hour before the reporting time with the printed e-admit card, a government photo identification, two matching passport photographs and a black or blue ballpoint pen. No electronic devices of any kind are permitted.
For the physical stages, wear sportswear suitable for a timed run and bring any category certificate needed to claim a relaxed standard; these are checked on the day, not assumed from your application form.
