What SSC MTS is
The Multi Tasking Staff Examination recruits class 10 pass candidates into general support roles across central government offices: peon, daftary, jamadar, junior gestetner operator and similar posts, along with Havaldar posts in the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs. It is the lowest academic bar of any major SSC recruitment, which is exactly why it attracts one of the largest applicant pools in the country.
The work itself is largely physical and clerical support rather than desk based data work, and the Havaldar posts additionally require a physical efficiency test that the general MTS posts do not.
Who can apply
Class 10 pass is the only academic requirement, the lowest of the SSC exam family. The general age band is 18 to 27 years, though it varies slightly by post, always confirmed against the specific notification rather than assumed from a previous cycle.
How the exam runs
MTS is a single computer based test split into two back to back sessions. Session 1 covers Numerical and Mathematical Ability and Reasoning Ability and Problem Solving, forty questions in forty five minutes. Session 2 covers General Awareness and English Language and Comprehension, also forty questions in forty five minutes. There is no Tier 2 written stage the way SSC CGL or CHSL have one.
Candidates applying for Havaldar posts additionally sit a Physical Efficiency Test and Physical Standard Test, and all selected candidates undergo a medical examination before final appointment. General MTS posts do not carry a physical test.
Preparing the application
The photograph and signature specifications match the rest of the SSC family: a JPEG photograph between 20 and 50 kilobytes and a JPEG signature between 10 and 20 kilobytes. The resizers on this site handle both in your browser if your file is outside that range.
The application fee for general and OBC male candidates is one hundred rupees, waived for women, SC, ST, persons with disability and ex-servicemen.
On exam day
Arrive at least an hour before the reporting time on your admit card, with the printed e-admit card, a government photo identification, two matching passport photographs and a black or blue ballpoint pen. No mobile phones, smartwatches, calculators or other electronic devices are permitted inside the hall.
Havaldar candidates called for the physical test should additionally check the specific date, venue and standards notified separately for that stage, since it is scheduled after the written result rather than alongside it.
