What the job involves
A police constable is the front-line uniformed post in state police forces and central armed police forces: patrolling, law and order duty, investigation support and station work, depending on the specific force and posting. It is one of the largest categories of government recruitment by sheer number of posts, run separately by every state police department and by SSC for the central forces.
Postings and promotion structures differ by force. State police constables serve within their recruiting state; central force constables (BSF, CRPF, CISF and others) can be posted anywhere in the country and carry a more paramilitary service structure.
How to get there
There is no single constable exam covering the whole country. Each state police department runs its own recruitment exam on its own schedule for its own vacancies. The central route is SSC GD Constable, a single exam that recruits into the Central Armed Police Forces, the National Investigation Agency, the Secretariat Security Force and Rifleman posts in Assam Rifles.
A candidate serious about a constable post typically tracks both their home state’s police recruitment board and the SSC GD Constable cycle, rather than waiting on one.
Qualification you need
Class 10 pass is the common minimum across most state police forces and SSC GD Constable, though some states ask for class 12. Physical standards for height, chest and running time apply everywhere and vary by state, category and, in some forces, by region.
A realistic timeline
Every constable recruitment, state or central, follows broadly the same shape: a written test, a physical efficiency and standards test, and a medical examination, with no interview. State cycles run on their own irregular schedule; SSC GD Constable runs as a large, relatively predictable central recruitment. Preparing physical fitness standards alongside the written syllabus from the outset matters here more than in most other exam families, since a candidate who clears the written stage but fails the physical test does not advance.
