What GIC Re Assistant Manager is

GIC Re Assistant Manager recruits graduates into the Scale I management trainee cadre of General Insurance Corporation of India, India’s only public sector reinsurance company: a company that insures other insurance companies rather than dealing with retail policyholders directly. It recruits across several streams, including General, Legal, HR, Engineering, IT, Actuarial, Medical and Finance, and runs far smaller recruitment cycles than the primary insurers, typically around a hundred posts rather than several hundred.

Who can apply

A graduation degree in any discipline, with a minimum aggregate of 60% across all semesters or years of study (55% for SC and ST candidates), is the requirement, though specialist streams such as Legal, Engineering, Actuarial and Medical carry their own discipline-specific qualification. The general age band is roughly 21 to 30 years, with standard relaxations for reserved categories. Confirm the exact cutoff date against the current notification.

How the exam runs

Unlike LIC or the general insurers’ AO exams, GIC Re runs a single-tier online written test rather than separate Preliminary and Main stages: two and a half hours across Numerical Ability, Reasoning, General Awareness, Computer Literacy and English or Hindi Language, with a quarter mark penalty for each wrong answer. Candidates who clear the written test proceed to a Group Discussion, an Interview, and a medical examination. Combined marks across the written test, Group Discussion and Interview total two hundred.

Preparing the application

Photograph and signature specifications match the rest of the banking and insurance exam family: a JPEG photograph between 20 and 50 kilobytes and a JPEG signature between 10 and 20 kilobytes. The resizers on this site handle both in your browser without uploading anything.

The application fee is typically 1,000 rupees plus 18% GST for general candidates; SC, ST, PwBD and women candidates, along with employees of GIC Re or its GIPSA member companies, are generally fee-exempt.

On exam day

Arrive at least an hour before the reporting time on your admit card, with the printed e-admit card, a government photo identification, one recent passport size photograph and a black or blue ballpoint pen. No electronic devices are permitted inside the hall.

What the job actually involves

A GIC Re Assistant Manager works in reinsurance underwriting: assessing and pricing risk on large corporate and insurer portfolios rather than individual retail policies, handling claims on reinsurance treaties, and contributing to contract drafting, compliance and financial reporting. The role is based at GIC Re’s Head Office in Mumbai’s Churchgate district, but carries a transfer liability anywhere in India or abroad, reflecting GIC Re’s international reinsurance business. Probation runs a year, extendable by a further year, and the company requires a minimum four-year service commitment secured by a stamped indemnity bond equal to one year’s gross salary with two sureties. The official GIC Re website, linked above, carries the current notification, vacancy count and exact dates for the cycle you are applying to.
