What ECGC PO is
ECGC PO recruits graduates into the Probationary Officer, or Assistant Manager, cadre of Export Credit Guarantee Corporation of India, a specialised public sector body that insures Indian exporters and banks against the risk of an overseas buyer defaulting or a country turning politically or economically unstable. It is a small, highly specialised recruitment: cycles typically run well under a hundred vacancies, far fewer than the mainstream bank PO or insurance AO exams.
Who can apply
A graduate degree from a recognised university is the requirement for the Generalist stream. A Rajbhasha or Hindi specialist stream also runs in most cycles, requiring a Master’s degree in Hindi or Hindi Translation with English as a subject at the bachelor’s level. The general age band is roughly 21 to 30 years, “as on” 1 November of the recruitment year, with standard relaxations for reserved categories. Confirm the exact cutoff date against the current notification.
How the exam runs
The online examination is a two hour twenty minute objective test worth two hundred marks, covering Reasoning Ability, English Language, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and Professional Knowledge, with a quarter mark penalty for each wrong answer, followed by a forty minute Descriptive Test of English writing proficiency.
Candidates who clear the written stages proceed to an Interview. Final selection weighs the online and descriptive tests at 80% and the Interview at 20%.
Preparing the application
Photograph and signature specifications match the rest of the banking and insurance exam family: a JPEG photograph between 20 and 50 kilobytes and a JPEG signature between 10 and 20 kilobytes. The resizers on this site handle both in your browser without uploading anything.
The application fee is typically 950 rupees for general, OBC and EWS candidates, and 175 rupees for SC, ST and PwBD candidates, confirmed against the current notification.
On exam day
Arrive at least an hour before the reporting time on your admit card, with the printed e-admit card, a government photo identification, one recent passport size photograph and a black or blue ballpoint pen. No electronic devices are permitted inside the hall.
What the job actually involves
An ECGC PO underwrites export-credit insurance: evaluating an exporter’s or bank’s proposal, assessing the risk of a foreign buyer or country, and deciding whether and how much cover to grant and at what price. Day to day also includes processing and settling claims when an insured export payment fails, coordinating with banks and financial institutions that co-insure or rely on ECGC’s guarantee, and producing risk and credit analysis on exporters, sectors and countries. It is a desk-based underwriting and risk-analysis role rather than a branch-banking one, and postings are limited to major trade centres such as Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata. The official ECGC website, linked above, carries the current notification, vacancy count and exact dates for the cycle you are applying to.
