What LIC Assistant is
LIC Assistant recruits graduates into the Class III Assistant cadre of Life Insurance Corporation of India, the country’s largest life insurer. It is the entry level, branch-facing role at LIC, roughly comparable to a public sector bank clerk but inside an insurance company. LIC’s most recently confirmed completed recruitment cycle for this post ran in 2019, for more than eight thousand vacancies nationwide; no newer cycle had been confirmed at the time this page was written, so check the official website directly for the current status before assuming a fresh notification exists.
Who can apply
A bachelor’s degree from a recognised university is the requirement. Final-year students are generally not eligible to apply. The general age band runs from 18 to 30 years, with standard relaxations for reserved categories, confirmed against the current notification since the exact cutoff date varies by cycle.
How the exam runs
The Preliminary Examination is a one hour CBT covering Reasoning Ability, Quantitative Aptitude and English Language, and is qualifying only.
The Main Examination is a two and a half hour objective test of two hundred questions covering General and Financial Awareness, General English, Quantitative Aptitude, and Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude, with a quarter mark penalty for each wrong answer in this stage. Some cycles have also included a qualifying-only Language Test.
Preparing the application
Photograph and signature specifications match the rest of the banking and insurance exam family: a JPEG photograph between 20 and 50 kilobytes and a JPEG signature between 10 and 20 kilobytes. On exam day
Arrive at least an hour before the reporting time on your admit card, with the printed e-admit card, a government photo identification, one recent passport size photograph and a black or blue ballpoint pen. No electronic devices are permitted inside the hall.
What the job actually involves
An LIC Assistant mans the branch counter: cash transactions, premium receipts, single-window customer service, processing and checking policy documents and claims paperwork, and back-office record keeping. Probation runs six months, extendable up to a year, with a minimum three-year service commitment expected after training. LIC’s defined benefit pension, unusual for a role at this pay level, is one of the notable advantages of this post compared to the equivalent Assistant roles at the general insurers. LIC’s Assistant pay scale was revised under the 12th Bipartite Settlement, government-approved in March 2024 and applied retrospectively from August 2022, moving basic pay from roughly 27,840 rupees to roughly 38,700 rupees.
