What UPSC IES/ISS is

UPSC conducts a combined exam for the Indian Economic Service and the Indian Statistical Service, two specialised central government services that place economists and statisticians into policy analysis, planning, and data roles across ministries and departments such as the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the Finance Ministry, and the Planning Commission’s successor bodies. A candidate chooses one stream, IES or ISS, at the time of application, since the subject papers differ between them.

This is a postgraduate specialist exam, distinct from the Civil Services Examination in both eligibility and paper content: it recruits directly for economics and statistics expertise rather than general administration, and it does not carry the CSE’s broad optional-subject structure.

Who can apply

For the Indian Economic Service stream, a Master’s degree in Economics, Applied Economics, Business Economics, or Econometrics is required. For the Indian Statistical Service stream, a Master’s degree in Statistics, Mathematical Statistics, or Mathematics with Statistics is required, as specified in the notification. The general age limit is up to 30 years as on the date specified in the notification, with standard relaxations for reserved categories and persons with disability.

How the exam runs

The Written Examination is fully descriptive, covering General English and General Studies common to both streams, along with subject-specific papers in Economics for IES candidates or Statistics for ISS candidates. This tests depth of subject knowledge at a postgraduate level rather than objective recall.

Candidates who clear the Written Examination sit an Interview, referred to as the Personality Test. Final selection combines Written Examination marks and Interview marks, followed by a medical examination before appointment.

Preparing the application

UPSC specifies exact photograph and signature requirements in each notification rather than a fixed year to year standard, so check the current notification’s dimensions and file size before uploading. The tools on this site can resize your photograph to whatever specific target the notification states.

On exam day

Arrive at least an hour before the reporting time on your admit card, with the printed admit card, a government photo identification matching the name and photo on the admit card, and one recent passport size photograph. No electronic devices are permitted, and only material issued by UPSC at the centre may be used.

The official UPSC website, linked above, carries the current stream-wise vacancies, syllabus, and schedule for the cycle you are applying to.
