A grupo de recrutamento is a numbered category covering one subject area at one educational level, and every candidate in the concurso externo applies within one or more groups for which they hold the qualifying habilitacao profissional. Why does Portugal organise teachers by numbered groups instead of one general list?

Splitting recruitment by grupo de recrutamento lets the ministry rank and place candidates separately for each subject and level, since the qualifying habilitacao, the graduacao profissional accumulated, and the vacancy count all differ by subject. A mathematics teacher and a Portuguese teacher are never ranked against each other; each group runs its own list, matched separately during SIGRHE placement.

Do all groups accept the same kind of qualification?

No. Some groups, reportedly including 100, 110 and 910, require full qualificacao profissional and cannot be filled through habilitacao propria alone, according to DGAE FAQ material for the Concurso Externo Extraordinario. Does the choice of group affect graduacao profissional?

A teacher who qualifies in a second group later in their career starts accumulating group-specific service from that later date, not from when they first began teaching in a different group.
