What RRB Group D is

RRB Group D, formally the recruitment for Level 1 posts, fills the entry-level technical and support roles that keep Indian Railways running: track maintainer, helper and assistant posts across the mechanical, electrical, engineering and signalling departments. It does not require an engineering degree; class 10 pass or an ITI certificate in a relevant trade is enough, which is what makes this one of the largest and most accessible central government recruitment cycles by applicant volume.

This is distinct from RRB NTPC, which recruits for higher qualification, non-technical posts such as clerk and station master. A candidate should apply to whichever matches their qualification and interest rather than treating the two as the same recruitment.

Who can apply

Class 10 pass or an ITI certificate from a recognised institution is the qualification requirement. The general age band is roughly 18 to 33 years, with the standard relaxations for reserved categories. The exact cutoff date is confirmed against the current notification.

How the exam runs

The written stage is a single ninety minute computer based test of one hundred questions across General Science, Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, and General Awareness on Current Affairs, with a penalty of a third of a mark for each wrong answer.

Candidates who clear the CBT proceed to a Physical Efficiency Test, which measures running or weight-carrying ability against standards that differ by gender and post category, followed by document verification and a medical examination for those who clear the physical stage. There is no interview.

Preparing the application

Photograph and signature specifications match most Indian government exams: a JPEG photograph between 20 and 50 kilobytes and a JPEG signature between 10 and 20 kilobytes, resizable in your browser using the tools on this site.

The application fee is typically 500 rupees for general and OBC candidates, of which 400 rupees is refunded on appearing in the CBT, and 250 rupees for SC, ST, women, and other specified categories, fully refunded on appearing.

On exam day

Arrive at least ninety minutes before the reporting time on your admit card, with the printed e-admit card, a government photo identification, and two passport size photographs matching the one on the admit card. No electronic devices are permitted inside the hall.

For the Physical Efficiency Test, wear appropriate sportswear and confirm the specific running distance and time or weight-carrying standard for your category from the notification beforehand, since standards differ meaningfully by gender and are not identical across posts.

The official Indian Railways website and the relevant Railway Recruitment Board site, linked above, carry the current notification, vacancies and exact schedule.
