What the job involves
A Lower Divisional Clerk handles general office administration in a central government ministry or department: file management, correspondence, record keeping and routine administrative support. It is one of the most common class 12 level entry points into central government service, spread across almost every ministry and department, which means postings and office environments vary considerably even though the job title is the same everywhere.
LDC is usually the starting grade in a clerical cadre, with a defined promotion path to Upper Divisional Clerk and beyond over a career.
How to get there
There is no dedicated LDC exam. The post is one of the outcomes of the SSC Combined Higher Secondary Level Examination, alongside Junior Secretariat Assistant, which is functionally the same role under a different departmental naming convention. Which post and department you are allotted depends on your CHSL rank and the preference order you submit against that cycle’s notified vacancies.
Qualification you need
Class 12 pass from a recognised board is the requirement, the standard CHSL baseline. No additional certification or typing requirement applies to this post, unlike Data Entry Operator.
A realistic timeline
Because this post comes through CHSL, the practical path is the same as any CHSL aspirant’s: clear Tier 1 and Tier 2, then rank well enough that an LDC vacancy in a ministry you would accept remains against your preference order. The number of LDC vacancies notified varies by cycle and should be checked in the current notification rather than assumed from a previous year, since it directly affects how many candidates by rank can expect an allotment to this post.
