Government exams after 12th, sorted by your marksheet
Which government exams a 12th pass actually opens, which need appearing candidates, and why RRB NTPC and Coast Guard recruitment split eligibility by post.
Editorial Desk
The question “what are the government exams after 12th” usually gets answered with a long, generic list copied from one site to the next. Most of that list is wrong for a specific candidate, because it does not check what a 12th pass qualifies for on each exam. Some recruitments split the qualification by post within the same exam: one post on RRB NTPC takes a 12th pass, another post on the same exam needs a degree. Getting this wrong wastes an application fee and, worse, months of preparation aimed at an exam a 12th pass cannot sit.
The qualification on your marksheet decides the list
A 12th pass opens a specific band of exams, not every government exam. It does not open the graduate band, and it does not mean every post on a 12th-pass-level exam is open to you, because some recruitments run multiple posts at different qualification levels under one exam name. The list below is built from the qualification each exam’s own notification states, not a generic “10+2 pass” assumption.
Exams open with a 12th pass
- SSC CHSL. States its qualification as Class 12 (10+2) pass from a recognised board. It recruits for clerk, data entry operator and postal assistant posts across central government departments.
- SSC Stenographer. States Class 12 pass (10+2) from a recognised board, in any stream, for both the Grade C and Grade D posts it recruits for.
- RRB NTPC, undergraduate posts only. The exam’s qualification is Class 12 pass for its undergraduate-level posts and a bachelor’s degree for its graduate-level posts, on the same recruitment cycle. Read the post-wise qualification in the notification before choosing which posts to apply for, since the two bands are not interchangeable.
- Indian Coast Guard Navik (General Duty). Requires Class 12 pass with Physics and Mathematics. The Yantrik post recruited in the same cycle needs a diploma in Mechanical, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, not a 12th pass alone, so the two posts are not the same eligibility gate.
- NDA. Accepts Class 12 pass or appearing candidates. The Army wing accepts any stream; the Air Force and Naval wings require Physics and Mathematics. Entry beyond the written exam still depends on the SSB interview and the medical standards, which a marksheet does not decide.
University entrance is a different category from recruitment
CUET UG also states its qualification as Class 12 pass or appearing, and it gets folded into “government exams after 12th” lists constantly, which causes real confusion. CUET UG is not a recruitment exam. It is the common entrance test for admission into undergraduate programmes at participating central and state universities. Clearing it gets you into a degree course, not a government post.
For a candidate weighing “job now or degree first,” this is the actual fork: CUET UG leads toward a degree and, three or four years later, eligibility for the graduate-level recruitment exams that a 12th pass alone does not open. The exams in the section above lead toward a government post directly, on a 12th pass.
What looks close but is not open yet
Two other bands get confused with “after 12th,” and neither is correct:
- Class 10 level exams such as SSC MTS, SSC GD Constable, RRB Group D, India Post GDS, and the RPF Constable post state a Class 10 pass as their qualification, sometimes with an ITI certificate as an alternative. A 12th pass clears this bar comfortably but so does a 10th pass, which is a different, lower band, not the same one.
- Graduate-level exams such as SSC CGL, IBPS PO and Clerk, SBI PO and UPSC’s civil services examination need a bachelor’s degree in hand. Appearing for final-year exams does not satisfy this for most of these recruitments; check the specific notification rather than assuming.
Some state Public Service Commissions run posts at the 12th-pass level as well. This site does not carry a state PSC page confirmed at that level yet, so if that is what you are searching for, go to the state commission’s own site and read the qualification column directly rather than relying on a summary anywhere, including this one.
Age and category rules still sit on top of the qualification
Passing the qualification bar is necessary but not sufficient. Every exam above also sets an age band, and a category relaxation can move the upper limit for OBC, SC, ST, PwD and ex-servicemen candidates well past the general limit. How that relaxation works and why it is not the same figure across exams is covered in age relaxation in government exams. Once you know your category’s relaxed limit, run your date of birth against the exam’s stated “age as on” date using the age calculator rather than counting years by hand, since that is where most eligibility mistakes actually happen.
How to choose, in order
- Confirm whether your board result is final or provisional. Exams that say “pass” rather than “appearing” mean a final result, not a provisional mark sheet.
- Decide whether you want a post now or a degree first. That single decision splits the list above into the recruitment exams and CUET UG.
- For Coast Guard and NDA, check the physical and medical standards before you invest preparation time, since these eliminate candidates who clear the written stage.
- Read the current notification for whichever exam you settle on. Every figure above is what that exam states as a pattern; it is not a guarantee for the current cycle.
The list is short because it is accurate
“Government exams after 12th” is not a long list once it is filtered by what a 12th pass genuinely qualifies for. It is SSC CHSL, SSC Stenographer, RRB NTPC’s undergraduate posts, Coast Guard Navik (General Duty), and NDA, plus CUET UG if the plan is a degree first. For the wider structure of who conducts what and at which qualification level, see what a sarkari exam actually is. For anything specific to one of these exams, its own page on this site links the current notification, which is the only place the qualification line is authoritative.
