What SSC JE is
The Staff Selection Commission Junior Engineers examination recruits diploma and degree holders in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering into Junior Engineer posts across central government departments: the Central Public Works Department, Military Engineer Services, Central Water Commission, Border Roads Organisation, the Department of Telecommunications and several others, each of which publishes its own department-wise vacancy split inside the same notification. It sits alongside GATE for PSU recruitment and ISRO Scientist/Engineer as one of the direct routes into government engineering work that does not require a GATE score, which matters if you are weighing government jobs for B.Tech graduates without GATE.
Who can apply
Eligibility runs on a degree or diploma in the relevant engineering discipline from a recognised institution, but the exact requirement, and whether a diploma alone is accepted or a full degree is required, varies by recruiting department and post. Read the specific department’s vacancy entry in the notification before assuming your qualification clears every post listed.
The general age band is 18 years as on the 1st of August of the examination year at the minimum, with the upper limit varying between 30 and 32 years depending on the recruiting department, plus the standard relaxations for OBC, SC/ST and PwD candidates. Confirm both age limits against the department you are targeting inside the notification, since a single SSC JE cycle can carry more than one upper age limit across its different recruiting departments.
How the exam runs
SSC JE is a two-paper computer based exam followed by document verification, with no interview and no physical test.
Paper I is an objective screening round: two hours, two hundred questions worth two hundred marks, split across General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, and General Engineering in your own discipline. Each wrong answer costs a quarter mark.
Paper II is the technical paper that carries the real weight: two hours, one hundred questions worth three hundred marks, entirely on General Engineering in your chosen discipline, Civil and Structural, Electrical, or Mechanical. Each wrong answer here costs a full mark, a steeper penalty than Paper I, so guesswork is more costly on this paper specifically. Preparing the application
Photograph and signature specifications follow the standard SSC format given in the current notification: a recent JPEG photo against a light background and a scanned signature in black or blue ink on white paper, both within the size range SSC sets for that cycle. The application fee for general and OBC candidates is one hundred rupees. Women, SC, ST, PwD and ex-servicemen candidates apply without paying a fee.
On exam day
Reach the centre at least an hour before the reporting time on your admit card. Carry the printed e-admit card, an original government photo identification, two passport size photographs matching the one on the admit card, and a black or blue ballpoint pen. Mobile phones, smartwatches, calculators, earphones and any other electronic device are prohibited inside the examination hall.
After the result
Candidates who clear both papers are called for document verification against their qualification and category certificates.
