What India Post GDS is

Gramin Dak Sevak, commonly called India Post GDS, recruits into Branch Postmaster, Assistant Branch Postmaster and Dak Sevak posts at post offices across the country, mostly in rural areas. It is genuinely different from almost every other exam on this site in one important way: there is no written examination at all. Selection is a merit list computed directly from each candidate’s class 10 marks, using a weighting formula published in the notification, rather than from a competitive test held for this recruitment.

This makes GDS recruitment fast to apply for and unusually transparent in one sense: your own class 10 marksheet already tells you where you would roughly stand, once you know the formula. It also means there is nothing to study for beyond what you already completed at school.

Who can apply

Class 10 pass from a recognised board is the requirement, along with computer knowledge and, in most postal circles, having studied the local language of that circle up to at least class 10. The general age band is roughly 18 to 40 years, with standard relaxations for reserved categories and persons with disability. The exact qualification detail, including which local language applies to which circle, is set out per circle in the notification, since India Post recruits circle by circle rather than in one undifferentiated national cycle.

How selection works

There is no written test, no interview and no physical test. India Post computes a merit score for each applicant from their class 10 marks according to a formula in the notification, generates a merit list per circle and per category, and calls candidates for document verification in merit order against the notified vacancies. Getting this post is essentially about your existing class 10 result and the vacancy count in your chosen circle, not about any further preparation.

Document verification checks your original class 10 marksheet and certificate, government photo identification, and any category certificate you claimed in your application, against what you submitted online.

Preparing the application

Since there is no written test, the entire preparation is getting the application itself right: correct circle selection, an accurate class 10 marks entry, and photograph and signature files that meet the notification’s specification. India Post specifies exact dimensions in each notification rather than a fixed standard, so check the current one before uploading. The tools on this site can resize your photograph to whatever target the notification states.

On the day of document verification

Bring your original class 10 marksheet and certificate, a government photo identification, and any category or other certificate you claimed when applying. There is no written exam day to prepare for in the way most exams on this site require.

The official India Post GDS recruitment portal and the India Post website, linked above, carry the current circle-wise vacancies, the exact merit formula for the cycle, and the schedule for applications and document verification.
