What UPSC IFS is
The Indian Forest Service Examination, conducted by UPSC, recruits into the Indian Forest Service, one of India’s three All India Services alongside the IAS and IPS. Officers manage forest conservation, wildlife protection, and forest-based resource administration across the country, posted to states but serving under the central government’s cadre system in the same structural way IAS and IPS officers do.
The Preliminary Examination is shared with the Civil Services Examination: a candidate applying for IFS sits the same Preliminary paper as CSE candidates, and only chooses the IFS-specific Main Examination path after clearing that shared Preliminary stage.
Who can apply
A Bachelor’s degree with at least one science subject from a notified list (such as Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics, Mathematics, or Statistics), or a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Forestry, Veterinary Science, or Engineering, is required, as specified in the notification. The general age band is roughly 21 to 32 years as on the date specified in the notification, with standard relaxations for reserved categories and persons with disability.
How the exam runs
The Preliminary Examination is an objective test of General Studies and the Civil Services Aptitude Test, shared with the Civil Services Examination, with negative marking for wrong answers as specified in the notification. Clearing the Preliminary Examination qualifies a candidate to sit the IFS Main Examination specifically.
The Main Examination is fully descriptive: General English, General Knowledge, and two optional subjects chosen from a notified list relevant to forestry and allied sciences, each with two papers. This is a distinct paper structure from the Civil Services Main Examination, reflecting the technical, science-based nature of the forest service role.
Candidates who clear the Main Examination sit an Interview, referred to as the Personality Test. Final selection combines Main Examination marks and Interview marks, followed by a medical examination before appointment.

On exam day
Arrive at least an hour before the reporting time on your admit card, with the printed admit card, a government photo identification matching the name and photo on the admit card, and one recent passport size photograph. No electronic devices are permitted, and only material issued by UPSC at the centre may be used.
