What RBI Assistant is

RBI Assistant recruits graduates into the Class III clerical cadre of the Reserve Bank of India, and is widely regarded as the highest-paid clerical role in India’s government job market. Unlike a commercial bank clerk, the role is internal-office support work inside RBI’s regional administration rather than customer-facing branch banking, and it carries a five-day work week, unusual among the exams on this site at the clerical grade.

Who can apply

A bachelor’s degree from a recognised university, with a minimum 50% aggregate marks (relaxed for SC, ST and PwBD candidates), plus basic word-processing and computer skills, is the requirement. The general age band is roughly 20 to 28 years, with standard relaxations for reserved categories. Confirm the exact cutoff date against the current notification.

How the exam runs

The Preliminary Examination is a one hour test of one hundred questions across English Language, Numerical Ability and Reasoning Ability, with a quarter mark penalty for each wrong answer; it is qualifying only.

The Main Examination is a two hour fifteen minute objective test of two hundred questions across Reasoning Ability, English Language, Numerical Ability, General Awareness and Computer Knowledge, with the same quarter mark penalty. A Language Proficiency Test, pass or fail, follows for candidates who clear the Main Examination.

Preparing the application

Photograph and signature specifications match the rest of the banking and insurance exam family: a JPEG photograph between 20 and 50 kilobytes and a JPEG signature between 10 and 20 kilobytes. The resizers on this site handle both in your browser without uploading anything.

The application fee is typically 450 rupees plus 18% GST for general, OBC and EWS candidates, and 50 rupees plus 18% GST for SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates, confirmed against the current notification. Vacancy counts vary considerably by cycle, from several hundred to several thousand, so check the current notification rather than assuming a fixed number.

On exam day

Arrive at least an hour before the reporting time on your admit card, with the printed e-admit card, a government photo identification, one recent passport size photograph and a black or blue ballpoint pen. No electronic devices are permitted inside the hall.

What the job actually involves

An RBI Assistant handles data entry, ledger maintenance, verification of banking and currency documents, treasury operations, cash vault duties and correspondence at one of RBI’s regional offices, mostly state capitals. Confirmation as a permanent RBI employee follows a probation period. RBI’s defined benefit pension, a five-day work week and postings limited to major cities make this one of the more sought-after clerical roles on this site, despite the lower headline pay of a clerical grade compared to an officer post. The official RBI recruitment portal, linked above, carries the current notification, vacancy count and exact dates for the cycle you are applying to.
