What the job involves
A Data Entry Operator inputs and manages digital records for central government departments, a role that leans more heavily on typing speed and accuracy than most other class 12 level government posts. It carries the same job security and central government service structure as other CHSL outcomes, with the added distinction that your typing performance is a formal, tested part of selection rather than an on-the-job skill you pick up.
Some Data Entry Operator posts carry a Grade A designation with a higher pay scale than the standard grade, allotted separately within the same recruitment.
How to get there
There is no dedicated Data Entry Operator exam. The post is one of the outcomes of the SSC Combined Higher Secondary Level Examination, and unlike Lower Divisional Clerk, Junior Secretariat Assistant and Postal Assistant, this specific post requires clearing a Skill Test in Data Entry: a timed computer typing speed test with a specified minimum keystrokes per hour, set out in the notification, that only Data Entry Operator candidates take.
Qualification you need
Class 12 pass from a recognised board is the base academic requirement, the same as any other CHSL post. What differs is the additional Skill Test requirement: the exact minimum speed is specified in the notification and should be practiced against directly, since it is a pass or fail test rather than one that contributes marks to the ranking.
A realistic timeline
Preparation for this post has two tracks that both matter: the standard CHSL Tier 1 and Tier 2 preparation that every CHSL post requires, and separately, sustained typing practice well before the Skill Test, since typing speed builds over weeks of consistent practice rather than being learnable in the days between the written result and the skill test date. Candidates aiming specifically for this post should start typing practice early rather than treating it as a formality to prepare for only after clearing the written stages.
