What CSIR NET is
The Joint CSIR-UGC National Eligibility Test, conducted by the National Testing Agency on behalf of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, determines eligibility for a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and for Lecturer-ship in the core science subjects: Chemical Sciences, Earth Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Physical Sciences. It runs alongside UGC NET as a separate exam specifically for these science disciplines, since CSIR laboratories and science departments have their own subject-specific syllabus that UGC NET’s general-subject papers do not cover.
Like UGC NET, this is an eligibility exam rather than a recruitment exam: qualifying makes a candidate eligible for JRF fellowship support during a PhD or for Lecturer-ship, it does not itself place a candidate into a specific job, lab, or PhD seat.
Who can apply
A Master’s degree, or an equivalent qualification, in a subject covered by the notified science papers is required, as specified in the notification. There is no upper age limit for Lecturer-ship eligibility; the Junior Research Fellowship route carries an age limit as specified in the notification, with standard relaxations for reserved categories and persons with disability.
How the exam runs
CSIR NET is a single computer based paper, divided into three parts. Part A is a General Aptitude section common across all subjects. Part B tests subject-specific knowledge at a moderate difficulty. Part C tests subject-specific knowledge through higher-order, analytical questions. Negative marking applies for wrong answers as specified in the notification.
There is no interview or further stage: eligibility is determined directly from the score against the cutoffs NTA publishes for each subject and category, separately for JRF and Lecturer-ship.
Preparing the application
NTA specifies exact photograph and signature requirements in each notification rather than a fixed year to year standard, so check the current notification’s dimensions and file size before uploading. The tools on this site can resize your photograph to whatever specific target the notification states.
On exam day
Arrive at least an hour before the reporting time on your admit card, with the printed admit card and a government photo identification matching the name and photo on the admit card. No electronic devices are permitted inside the exam centre.
