What the Guardia Civil oposicion is
The Guardia Civil is Spain’s national gendarmerie, a security force with military status that polices rural territory, the road network, the coast and the borders, and that runs specialist units in customs, environmental crime, mountain rescue and organised crime. Entry at the base level is through the Escala de Cabos y Guardias, the scale that contains the ranks of guardia civil, cabo and cabo primero. The selection process is convoked by the Direccion General de la Guardia Civil and run by its Jefatura de Ensenanza.
Unlike a civil administrative oposicion, this is not a process that ends with an exam and an appointment. Candidates who pass are admitted as alumnos to a centro docente de formacion, and only on completing that training are they incorporated into the corps.
The convocatoria cycle
The process is convoked once a year by a resolution published in the Boletin Oficial del Estado. For the 2026 cycle, Resolucion 160/38243/2026 of 5 May was published in the BOE of 8 May 2026 and convoked 3,240 plazas, split between reserved access for professional military personnel with at least five years of service, places for alumni of the Colegio de Guardias Jovenes, and open access.
Applications are filed only through the Sede Electronica de la Guardia Civil, under the procedure “Solicitud de Ingreso en la Escala de Cabos y Guardias”, and a valid digital certificate is required. The instancia period is short, fifteen working days from publication, which for the 2026 cycle closed on 29 May 2026. The tasa de derechos de examen for that cycle was 11.66 euros, halved for a familia numerosa of general category and waived for several categories listed in the bases.
The tests
The process runs in two blocks. The first, held on 11 July 2026 for the 2026 cycle, groups the written and intellectual tests: a ten minute ortografia test, a knowledge test of 100 multiple choice questions with four options over 90 minutes covering grammar, the general temario and English, and a psychotechnical test of intellectual aptitudes. The second block, held later in the year, covers physical aptitude, the medical examination against the cuadro medico de exclusiones, a personality questionnaire and a personal interview.
Every part is governed by the baremos and minimum scores in the convocatoria, and the calendar for each test is fixed by resolutions of the tribunal published as the process advances, not in the original convocatoria.
Requirements
Spanish nationality is required, along with a titulo de Graduado en Educacion Secundaria Obligatoria or a higher academic level, a class B driving licence, and an age between 18 and the limit set in the bases. The qualification bar is deliberately low relative to the difficulty of the process: what filters candidates is the combination of a broad temario, an English component and a physical standard, not the entry qualification.
What candidates underestimate
Three things. The instancia window is measured in working days and closes long before most candidates feel ready, so registration has to be treated as a separate deadline from preparation. The English component is a real part of the knowledge test, not a formality, and it is where candidates from a purely memorisation based preparation lose marks. And the physical tests come months after the written one, which means fitness preparation cannot be postponed until the knowledge test result is known.
