What UPSC CAPF AC is
UPSC conducts this exam to recruit gazetted Assistant Commandants into the Central Armed Police Forces (CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP and SSB), a meaningfully higher entry rank than the Sub Inspector posts SSC CAPF SI recruits into, covered elsewhere on this site. Assistant Commandant is an officer-level entry into these forces, structurally closer to how NDA and CDS commission officers into the Army, Navy and Air Force, though CAPF forces are paramilitary rather than armed forces.
A candidate who clears this exam is commissioned as an officer, with a career path toward higher ranks within whichever force they are allotted to, based on their rank in the merit list and force preference.
Who can apply
A Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university in any discipline is the only academic requirement. The general age band is roughly 20 to 25 years as on the date specified in the notification, with standard relaxations for reserved categories and persons with disability. Physical standards (height, chest, and other requirements) are specified in the notification and vary slightly by category and gender.
How the exam runs
Paper I is an objective test of General Ability and Intelligence, with negative marking as specified in the notification. Candidates who clear Paper I advance to Paper II, a fully descriptive paper covering General Studies, Essay writing, and Comprehension, testing written expression and depth of understanding rather than objective recall.
Candidates who clear both papers proceed to the Physical Standard Test and Physical Efficiency Test, checking height, chest measurement, and running or other physical requirements. A Medical Examination follows, checking fitness standards specific to the forces. Final selection includes an Interview/Personality Test, with overall merit computed by combining marks across these stages as UPSC specifies each cycle.
Preparing the application
UPSC specifies exact photograph and signature requirements in each notification rather than a fixed year to year standard, so check the current notification’s dimensions and file size before uploading. The tools on this site can resize your photograph to whatever specific target the notification states.
On exam day
Arrive at least an hour before the reporting time on your admit card, with the printed admit card, a government photo identification matching the name and photo on the admit card, and one recent passport size photograph. No electronic devices are permitted, and only material issued by UPSC at the centre may be used. For the physical stages, follow the specific reporting instructions, clothing, and footwear requirements set out separately.
The official UPSC website, linked above, carries the current force-wise vacancies, physical standards, syllabus, and schedule for the cycle you are applying to.
