What AIBE is
The All India Bar Examination, conducted by the Bar Council of India, determines whether a law graduate who has enrolled as an advocate with a State Bar Council is fit to practice law in India. It is not a government recruitment exam: passing it does not place a candidate into a job. It is a mandatory eligibility test that converts a provisional enrolment into a Certificate of Practice, without which an enrolled advocate cannot practice in Indian courts.
This makes AIBE the one exam almost every law graduate who wants to practice, rather than only aspirants targeting a specific government legal post, eventually needs to clear, regardless of whether they later sit exams like the judicial services exams also covered on this site.
Who can apply
A Bachelor’s degree in Law from a university recognised by the Bar Council of India, along with provisional enrolment as an advocate with a State Bar Council, is required, as specified in the notification. There is no upper age limit, since AIBE tests professional competence rather than serving as a recruitment cutoff.
How the exam runs
AIBE is a single, open book, objective paper. Candidates may bring Bare Acts and other reference material the notification permits, since the exam tests the ability to apply the law correctly under time pressure rather than pure memorisation. It covers core and procedural subjects including Constitutional Law, the Code of Civil Procedure, the Code of Criminal Procedure, the Evidence Act, and Professional Ethics, along with other subjects the current notification lists.
There is no interview or further stage. Clearing the qualifying cutoff BCI sets for that attempt earns the Certificate of Practice.
Preparing the application
BCI specifies exact photograph and signature requirements in each notification rather than a fixed year to year standard, so check the current notification’s dimensions and file size before uploading. The tools on this site can resize your photograph to whatever specific target the notification states.
On exam day
Arrive at least an hour before the reporting time on your admit card, with the printed admit card, a government photo identification matching the name and photo on the admit card, and the specific Bare Acts and reference material the notification permits for this open book exam. No electronic devices are permitted, and material not explicitly permitted is not allowed inside the exam hall.
