What UPPSC PCS-J is
The Uttar Pradesh Provincial Civil Service (Judicial Branch) exam, commonly called UP PCS-J, is UPPSC’s route into the state’s judicial services, appointing successful candidates as Civil Judge (Junior Division). It is a law graduate specific exam, structurally similar in shape to the general UPPSC PCS exam this site also covers, but drawn entirely from law subjects and reserved for candidates who are already enrolled advocates.
Each state runs its own judicial services exam through its own public service commission or high court; UP PCS-J is Uttar Pradesh’s, and its pattern, eligibility, and vacancy count are specific to Uttar Pradesh rather than representative of every state’s judicial exam.
Who can apply
A Bachelor’s degree in Law from a recognised university, along with enrolment as an advocate under the Advocates Act, is required, as specified in the notification. The general age band is roughly 22 to 35 years as on the date specified in the notification, with standard relaxations for reserved categories and persons with disability. UPPSC publishes the exact qualification and enrolment cutoff dates in each notification, since these details can change between cycles.
How the exam runs
The Preliminary Examination is an objective test covering General Knowledge and Law, with negative marking for wrong answers as specified in the notification. Only candidates who clear the Preliminary cutoff advance.
The Main Examination consists of conventional, descriptive papers covering General Knowledge, language papers, and Law papers specific to the judicial role, testing depth of legal knowledge and written expression rather than objective recall.
Candidates who clear the Main Examination sit an Interview, referred to as the Viva Voce. Final selection combines Main Examination marks and Interview marks, followed by a medical examination before appointment.
Preparing the application

On exam day
Arrive at least an hour before the reporting time on your admit card, with the printed admit card and a government photo identification matching the name and photo on the admit card. No electronic devices are permitted inside the exam centre.
